Indianapolis 2018: Challenger Class Qualifying reactions

The Challengers explain how they flew in Qualifying

Davidson finished his day with a smile

In testing wind conditions, the Red Bull Air Race Challenger Class pilots got one last run in Qualifying before tomorrow's race. Here's how they thought they did...

Kenny Chiang
"Every run I do, I'm feeling better, so I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow. The wind picked up and I had to make two or three last second corrections and I'm surprised to get away without any penalties. I think the conditions will be similar tomorrow and I'm getting more confident every time I fly."

Baptiste Vignes
"It was a difficult day today. I made a mistake in FP3 trying to find difficult lines. This afternoon was better, the engine was hot, but no mistakes so I'm happy. It was a bit bumpy out there today, but it's a new game tomorrow. And congratulations to Patrick, he made a beautiful run and it was good to see everyone close to each other in the timings. It will be interesting."

Florian Bergér
"I don't like standing starts, but for the moment I'm quite happy with my results. The flying could be a little smoother, but overall I am pleased because I had a very big break since my last race, so it's step by step again. For sure the weather is a bit better than last year here, and I hope tomorrow the weather will be like today."

Kevin Coleman
"Honestly, I'm not really sure what happened today. I'll have to go back and look at the video, I have no idea at the moment. The two penalties were my fault, but I think I had the slowest time even without the penalties so I'm not really sure, I'll just have to figure it out. Historically I'm better when I fly first in a race, I've won a couple of races that way so maybe I can do it again."

Patrick Davidson
"Where I come from is nicknamed the windy city, so I am pretty used to wind, however when the pylons are dancing around a little bit, it does make it a bit more daunting. But it was good fun, I really enjoyed it. It's a complete honour to be here – to look around and go to the museum and you see the names of the people that have raced here. For me even to be here is a massive, massive achievement. To have a good clean run in Quali is great, but the race is tomorrow and that's where it counts."

Dario Costa
"This is my first Qualifying at Indianapolis, which is very exciting. The wind was different than this morning, but it's all doable – it's not really, really windy. It's a nice track, I like it a lot, so good emotion, good vibes. I think I have the line, now I need to make it happen. This afternoon I felt good in the plane but I don't think I was flying the line I really wanted. So I need to look at the data, but no penalties, so it's OK."

Daniel Genevey
"Free Practice was OK, but Qualifying was slow and I don't know why. I'll have to go and look at the data. I think I had quite a hot engine. The flying I did was what I was aiming at, but I need to see why I'm slow. I need to do my best tomorrow. The wind helped in the VTM but I'm not sure about the other parts of the track."
