With the return to the Ascot Racecourse for the third year in a row the Red Bull Air Race pilots are showing good form in the first runs through the tree-lined track with the sun shining brightly. Germany's Matthias Dolderer, the current leader in the World Championship standings demonstrated clearly that he's here to extend his lead with strong performances in both Free Practice sessions on Friday.
Dolderer stopped the clock in 1:05.224 in the first session, ahead of Australia's Matt Hall (1:06.685) and Juan Velarde of Spain (1:07.886).
The German pilot continued in promising form in the following session, although he couldn't catch Yoshihide Muroya and Michael Goulian, who stormed ahead to take the lead. Muroya's run of 1:05.965 pushed him to the top of the timesheet, while American Goulian – currently in 12th overall – was the surprise package in second. A new fuel and smoke oil system has given him a clear weight advantage, which could help Goulian to launch a mid-season campaign.
