Sonka soars in stormy conditions

Martin Sonka tops the timesheet after day one in Budapest

Martin Sonka in Budapest

Martin Sonka looked to be fighting fit in turbulent conditions today as he topped the Free Practice 1 timesheet in testing conditions in Budapest.

The track conditions were challenging today in the Hungarian capital with a very turbulent track. So much so, that the Free Practice 2 session was cancelled due to high winds at the Race Airport.

The pilots all managed to get one session in the 24-Gate track and Sonka set the pace with a time of 1:05.796 – and that included a one second penalty for insufficient smoke. Closest to the Czech pilot, was current World Champion Matthias Dolderer who is looking to get back in form. The German was just 0.198s behind Sonka.

In third place was Yoshihide Muroya, who has arrived here in the form of his career after taking back-to-back wins in San Diego and Chiba. Muroya crossed the chequered pylons with a time of 1:06.447, 0.651s behind the leader.

Matt Hall was fourth, and despite not enjoying his flight, now feels that he has his new raceplane set up exactly how he wants. He was the only other pilot to be within a second of Sonka.

Mikael Brageot, who flew under the Chain Bridge for the first time today, finished an impressive sixth place in the session. Cristian Bolton, the other Master Class pilot flying under the bridge for the first time, collected a few penalties before he pulled a Safety Climb Out (SCO), which meant he was unable to set a valid time. Peter Podlunsek also pulled a SCO.

Tomorrow will see the Master Class pilots compete in one more Free Practice session before they go into Qualifying. You can follow all the action HERE.
