World Championship leader Michael Goulian was knocked out of the Round of 14 when he collected a penalty for sinking in the gate, whilst title hunter Matt Hall was the quickest of the day so far. Here's how the heats played out...
Le Vot vs Hall
As François Le Vot was in the track he had all the right lines and was looking good until Gate 6 when he rolled too early out of the gate and was given a two second penalty for incorrect level flying. That gave Hall a time of 1:01.674 to beat. It wasn't a problem for Hall who flew cleanly and set a sub-one minute time that was 2.392s quicker than Le Vot.
Brageot vs McLeod
Although Mika Brageot flew cleanly, he was slow in the track and looked disappointed at the end of his run when he heard that his time was 1:01.096. That was a time Pete McLeod could easily beat. And he did. He flew the perfect run, and set a time of 59.491s, 1.605s faster than Brageot. McLeod will have to be careful in his Round of 8 run as he was close to clipping the Finish Gate pylon. Brageot was quick enough to to go through as the Fastest Loser.
Ivanoff vs Goulian
Nicolas Ivanoff flew a slow time of 1:01.124 and as he was going up against Michael Goulian it didn't look promising. Goulian was also slow, but it looked as if he had beaten Ivanoff until the judges gave him a two second penalty for sinking in the gate at Gate 12. That penalty put an end to his race and saw Ivanoff through to the Round of 8 for only the second time this season.
Velarde vs Sonka
Juan Velarde was aggressive in the track and looked on course for a strong time, but at Gate 7 he collected a two second penalty for incorrect level flying and that gave him a final time of 1:01.935. Martin Sonka knew that he could easily undercut that time and the ice-cool Czech pilot duly did. His time of 59.756s was quicker than Velarde's net time, so he would've gone through even if the Spanish pilot hadn't picked up the penalty.
Murphy vs Chambliss
Ben Murphy seemed to pull out of the VTM too early and then had to dramatically manoeuvre his raceplane to ensure he got to the next pylon, which he did, but not without picking up a penalty. He was penalised for sinking in the gate and then incorrect level through the gate, giving him a final time of 1:03.592. The series' most experienced pilot Chambliss knew he could easily beat that time and even though he wasn't quick, he did enough to see him through to the Round of 8.
Kopfstein vs Dolderer
Petr Kopfstein had a slight stall in one turn, which slowed him down slightly and he set a time of 1:00.853. Matthias Dolderer's smoke system didn't work and he instantly collected a one second penalty. Even with the penalty the second split light turned green and the German looked like he might go through. He then picked up another penalty for incorrect level in the gate and those extra two seconds were too much for him to overcome, ending his race. This also guarantees that Kopfstein won't finish ninth for the first time this season.
Bolton vs Muroya
Cristian Bolton was confident going into the track but he picked up a penalty at Gate 5 adding two seconds to his time and giving him a total time of 1:04.214. Muroya was calm and smooth in the track and although he didn't set the fastest time of the day, he was comfortably through to the Round of 8.
