Hong Kong's Kenny Chiang was quickest in the final practice session before today's Wiener Neustadt Race 1 and showed his rivals that he's here to win.
He was top in the FP2 session yesterday and managed to improve on the time. He crossed the Finish Gate in 1:03.348 – which was his first run and included the standing start.
Second on the timesheet was Challenger Cup leader Luke Czepiela. He was one of the last to fly and was able to see what lines the other pilots were flying. He was just 0.559s behind Chiang, but unlike Chiang, Czepiela wont race until tomorrow.
Melanie Astles was third on the timesheet and the only other pilot to come within a second of Chiang, she finished 0.847s behind the leader.
Baptiste Vignes was fourth in FP3. He was ahead of Chiang in the critical first split from the standing start, but lost pace in the trajectory through the track, finishing 1:05.092. Vignes is racing today and tomorrow so will want to improve, just behind Vignes was Coleman, who is also racing today.
Daniel Genevey, is another pilot in today's race and had five seconds of penalties in each of his first two FP3 runs, including a pylon hit in each, but pulled it together in his third run for a clean pass and a time of 1:05.476, which was enough to see him in sixth.
Patrick Davidson, who was top of FP1, was slightly slower today, but where the other pilots have caught him up, it was only good enough to see him down in seventh.
In his first stop since the April race in Cannes, Sweden's Daniel Ryfa still seems to be searching for his best line through the track, and his 1:06.156 was a dropoff from his FP 2 time and saw him down in eighth – he, along with Chiang and Vignes are the three pilots racing twice this weekend.
Flying in only his fourth race was Dario Costa who was pushing to find the right line. He collected a few penalties and was only able to post a time of 1:07.633, more than four seconds behind the leader. He will be analysing his lines before his race tomorrow.
