Kazan 2018: Master Class Round of 14 preview

How they line up for the first round of the Russian race

Ivanoff will be first into the track

After the epic Qualifying battle that took place yesterday, the cards have fallen and the pilots are ready to race. Here's how they face off on Race Day...

Heat 1
Nicolas Ivanoff vs Yoshihide Muroya
Ivanoff has been improving in this track and he'll want to carry on that momentum into today, but he'll have to rely on his vast skill and experience as he's the first pilot into the track and will have no knowledge of what the conditions will be like. Muroya has had mixed results so far this week, but the World Champion is brimming with confidence and believes he can get back to the top of the rankings.

Heat 2
Petr Kopfstein vs Ben Murphy
This is the first time these two have gone head to head. Murphy found some pace in his raceplane yesterday and thinks he has his best racing line prepared for today. Kopfstein couldn't understand where he lost the pace yesterday and was annoyed with how slow his time was. This heat will go down to the wire and it's one you don't want to miss.

Heat 3
Matt Hall vs Mika Brageot
Hall has been dominant all week, right up until Qualifying where he could only finish ninth. He seemed to struggle, but the Australian pilot has set the track record twice here so he knows how to get the most out of the Kazan course. Brageot has the advantage of flying after Hall and after setting a quicker time in Qualifying he knows he can beat him. This will be the fourth time these two pilots have gone head to head and it currently stands at 2-1 in Hall's favour.

Heat 4
Martin Sonka vs Juan Velarde
Since adding new winglets to his raceplane, Juan Velarde has been unstoppable and set some of the fastest times here in Kazan. He likes the track and seems exceptionally relaxed at the Race Airport. Sonka on the other hand has not been able to find the line he wants. Sonka is usually one of the fastest pilots from the first practice session of race week, but hasn't been here. Velarde has never beaten Sonka in a head to head, but today is his chance to do it.

Heat 5
Kirby Chambliss vs Pete McLeod
First and second from Kazan 2017 will face off in Heat 5. Both pilots could really do with a strong result here to kick their season into life. There was only 0.115s difference in the Qualifying time of these two so it could go either way. Both will be pushing hard to get through to the Round of 8.

Heat 6
Cristian Bolton vs Michael Goulian
After his best Master Class result in Budapest, Cristian Bolton should be pumped to get back out in the track, but his disappointing run in Qualifying sees him going up against one of the in-form pilots of the season. The two have not gone head to head this season before but last year they faced off in the Round of 14 twice, and Goulian won both. Could we see a hat-trick today?

Heat 7
François Le Vot vs Matthias Dolderer
Le Vot was angry with himself after performing badly in Qualifying. His times were getting faster and faster throughout Free Practice, but he hit a pylon on his first Qualifying run and it seemed to mess up his rhythm. He'll be hoping to return to his quick times today. Dolderer even surprised himself yesterday with his Qualifying time. The 2016 World Champion seemed to be back to his best yesterday afternoon and as he has nothing to lose, he'll give it everything in his run.

The Round of 14 begins at 13:00 (local time) watch all the action HERE.
