Last chance at Lausitzring for Challengers

It’s the final race for the Challengers to see who’s getting their ticket for Indianapolis

Fighting it out in Lausitz

The Challenger Class race in Lausitzring will be a heart-pumping adrenaline fuelled affair as the pilots have one final attempt at securing their place at the season finale in Indianapolis.

Six pilots will race at the Lausitzring and all of them have a chance at making the final in October. Three Challengers aren't racing here in Germany; Kevin Coleman, Kenny Chiang and Baptiste Vignes. After his win in Porto, Coleman has secured his place in the Final. Chiang can't qualify as he is sitting in eighth and not racing. And Vignes is currently sitting in sixth, which might be enough to see him make the final, it all depends on how the others fly on Sunday.

As for the six pilots racing, here's how they line up and their chances of making it to the US...

Florian Bergér
Current position: 1st
Current Points: 36
Bergér has already claimed his place in Indianapolis. His two wins and two second places see him sitting at the top of the leader board with the best chance of him securing back to back Challenger titles. Any result other than a win will see him remain on 36 points (as only the four best results count towards the final). If he wins here in Lausitz and neither Daniel Ryfa and Luke Czepiela come second, then Bergér will be crowned Challenger Champion!

Daniel Ryfa
Current position: =3rd
Current points 24
The Swedish pilot has also won his berth in the final and cannot be knocked out of the competition. However, he'll be looking to win here in Germany to make sure that Bergér doesn't get too far ahead. Ryfa has more wins to his name than any other Challenger and will want to do better than his fourth place finish here last year.

Luke Czepiela
Current position: =3rd
Current points 24
Czepiela is also safe and will be racing in Indianapolis. But much like Ryfa, he'll be looking to win to make sure he can keep up with Bergér and make a claim at becoming Champion. He finished second here last year (and third here at the rescheduled Budapest race), so he has a good chance to do well here once more.

Melanie Astles
Current Position: 5th
Current Points: 18
Astles needs to get a result here at the Lausitzring to ensure her place in the final. If she finishes two places behind Ben Murphy and three places behind Daniel Genevey she could miss out on the final in Indianapolis. She has collected two third place finishes so far this season, so will be looking to finish strongly.

Ben Murphy
Current Position: =6th
Current Points: 14
Murphy has to focus and perform well here to get himself into contention for Indianapolis. He currently has the same amount of points as Baptiste Vignes, but he will need to finish fourth or higher and above Daniel Genevey if he wants to ensure his place at the final in Indianapolis.

Daniel Genevey
Current Position: 9th
Current Points: 12
For Genevey to find himself in the season finale he will have to cross the finish line in at least fourth place and have Ben Murphy finish behind him. Genevey has had a strong debut season. He's missed out on podiums by the smallest of margins and has also topped the timesheets in Qualifying, so this race will be the time for him to push forward and claim a spot in Indianapolis.
