Velarde and Sonka storm the Lausitz track

Juan Velarde and Martin Sonka dominate the practice sessions

Velarde in his FP1 session

Martin Sonka blasted his championship rivals away with an unbelievably fast time of 50.703s in Free Practice 2 this afternoon. Juan Velarde put his Porto woes behind him with a fantastic flying performance that saw the Spaniard finish FP1 in 51.145s, quick enough to see him top of the timesheet.

In the earlier of today's session Matt Hall finished second behind Velarde. The Australian was 0.087s slower, clearly building on his success from Porto and looking to claim back-to-back wins here at the Lausitzring.

Chambliss was third in the first session today, with his best time of 51.415s, just 0.270s behind the leader. Then it was Pete McLeod, followed by Martin Sonka and Michael Goulian in sixth.

Yoshihide Muroya, who is sitting in fourth in the championship could only set a time good enough to finish eighth on the leaderboard behind Kopfstein who was seventh.

World Champion Matthias Dolderer, whose birthday it is today, could only finish in a time of 52.044s, which saw him in ninth. The first session showed how close the Championship is this year with the top nine pilots all finishing in under one second of each other.

The later session was a very different story. Kirby Chambliss set a time of 50.978s – the first pilot to break the 51s mark and it looked to be quick enough to see him on top. That was until Sonka flew a 50.926s which put him in first. Then in his third run he shaved even more time off, making him the one to watch tomorrow. Chambliss kept second place in the FP2 timesheet and Nicolas Ivanoff, who flew last, was able to steal third with a 51.077s.

Yoshihide Muroya was fourth in the later session and Qualifying king Pete McLeod was fifth. Once again the competition here in Germany is going to be tight, as the top eight pilots finished all under a second of each other's times.

The 14 Master Class pilots will be sitting down with their tacticians tonight to see where they can save as much time as possible and be ready for tomorrow's Qualifying
