Kenny Chiang set the track record in FP2 as the weather deteriorated with a focused and smooth flight. His time of 1:03.534 was the quickest Challenger flight and saw him finish the last flying session of the day on top.
The second session started in the dry but it soon began to rain and continued to worsen, which tested the Challengers' skill, but they all held their own perfectly.
Patrick Davidson, who topped FP1 was second in the later session finishing just 0.766s behind the pilot from Hong Kong. Third in FP2 was Daniel Genevey who knocked almost four seconds off his time from the earlier session.
Melanie Astles held on to fourth despite the worsening weather and set a time of 1:04.704. Behind her was Luke Czepiela in fifth, with Baptiste Vignes in 6th and and Kevin Coleman in seventh – all the top seven pilots finished within two seconds of each other.
Daniel Ryfa was eighth with Dario Costa ninth in the later session.
In the first session of the day Davidson was quickest. Flying for the first time since his podium in Kazan, the South African pilot was clearly comfortable flying over land for the first time in his race career.
His time of 1:05.286 was unbeatable in FP1 – and he set that time with a one second penalty for insufficient smoke. Closest to Davidson in the first session Coleman, the American pilot, seems to have retained form since his win in Kazan.
Ryfa was third on the FP1 timesheet, his time of 1:06.928 was 1.642s off the leader, while behind Ryfa was Vignes. The Frenchman struggled in the first session – his first two runs consisted of a Safety Climb Out (SCO) and a DNF for deviation from the course, but he pulled it back for his third run and it was enough to see him in fourth.
Astles was fifth, with Chiang in sixth; those were the last two pilots to fly within three seconds of Davidson. Genevey and Czepiela were more than three seconds behind the leader and Costa was ninth on the timesheet. He'll want to forget his time of 1:10.218.
Tomorrow the Challengers have one more practice session before the Wiener Neustadt Race 1, you can follow all the action live, HERE.
