The ground breaking app has won the internet’s highest honour

The LIVE VR experience

The internet community has decided: The Red Bull Air Race LIVE VR app is one of the People's Voice Award winners at the 22nd Annual Webby Awards. The exceptional virtual reality flight experience was awarded in the category Mobile Sites & Apps, Technical Achievement at this year's edition of the leading international awards honouring excellence on the Internet. The award ceremony will kick off tonight, 14 May, in New York.

With the vision to bring fans an unrivalled opportunity to immerse themselves in the new dimension of motorsport, Google and Red Bull Air Race teamed up to create the world's first virtual reality flight experience powered by real-time data. Available on Google's Daydream VR platform, Red Bull Air Race LIVE VR lets fans get closer than ever before to the high-speed Air Racing action of the World Championship – both live and on demand. The unique live VR experience allows fans to get right in the middle of the action, taking live sports broadcast to the next level for a global audience.

"The Red Bull Air Race is at the forefront of sports technology, and as the new dimension of motorsport, we are always looking towards the future. Using real-time flight data straight from our pilot cockpits and recreating the actual races in virtual reality, the Red Bull Air Race Live VR app is an exceptional broadcast tool. We are very excited and honoured for it to be recognised by the Internet community and presented with one of this year's Webby People's Voice Awards," says Erich Wolf, General Manager Red Bull Air Race.

The Webby Awards is the leading international awards organisation honouring excellence on the Internet, including Websites, Film & Video, Advertising, Media & PR, Mobile Sites & Apps, Social, Podcasts & Digital Audio, and Games. Established in 1996, the organisation received more than 13,000 entries from all 50 US states and 70 countries worldwide this year. The Webby Awards is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Consisting of web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities, the Academy selects the nominees for all award categories, before the worldwide voting public decides the winners of The Webby People's Voice Award.

The Red Bull Air Race LIVE VR experience utilises real-time telemetry data straight from the cockpits and recreates the flights in a 360° virtual reality, so viewers can become fully immersed in a race from different angles and viewpoints. The VR experience is fuelled by live flight data like latitude, longitude, roll, pitch and airspeed to generate breath-taking perspectives and a real-dimensional, live visualisation of each pilot's view.

"We are excited to help Red Bull Air Race to explore new ways of sports event broadcasting. Using Google Daydream fans around the globe can now get right into the air racing action – and experience the flight in an incredible Live VR environment based on real-time flight data," explains Achim Rietze, Strategy Lead, Google ZOO.

The Red Bull Air Race LIVE VR experience is now available via Daydream-ready smartphones like the Pixel and the Daydream View headsets, through the Google Play Store. Fans are able to download the VR experience for free and can not only dive into races that have already taken place, but also tune in live during real-time flight operations from the 2018 World Championship stops across the globe.

The Webby Awards ceremony will be held in New York City tonight, May 14, to celebrate the most inspiring, exciting and entertaining work on the Internet. Fans can watch the full Awards Show and show highlights on Tuesday, May 15, at
