Sonka quickest on day cut short by rain

Martin Sonka was quickest in FP1 while FP2 was cancelled

Sonka sets the track record

There was only one flying session for the Master Class pilots today in Wiener Neustadt before rain fell over the racetrack. It was Martin Sonka who took the honours in the earlier completed Free Practice 1 session.

Sonka was second last to fly in the track this afternoon – he had three runs and each time he was a second faster. On his third run he crossed the Finish Gate in 58.660s. This time won't indicate the true racing time, however, as here in Wiener Neustadt it is a standing start and the pilots didn't land and take off again for their second and third runs in the Free Practice sessions.

Championship leader Michael Goulian was second, just 0.232s behind the Czech pilot. Petr Kopfstein, who seems to have struggled this season, was back to his best finishing third on the timesheet. Just behind Kopfstein was Juan Velarde who set a time of 59.423s. These were the only pilots to set a time under a minute.

Fifth was Mika Brageot with compatriot François Le Vot one spot behind him. Second in the standings, Matt Hall was down in seventh, 1.5s behind Sonka.

Current World Champion Yoshihide Muroya had a nightmare session; he crossed the safety line in two of his three runs and only set one valid time, which was 1:00.908. Matthias Dolderer was in a similar situation. He picked up penalties in all of his runs and was given a DNF for deviation from the course. He found himself down in 12th place.

The pilots were preparing themselves for Free Practice 2 when the weather took an unfortunate turn. The rain came down which greatly reduced visibility and not long after thunder and lightening followed, leaving the Race Committee very little option apart from cancelling the session.

The pilots have FP3 at 13:15 tomorrow and then Qualifying at 16:00 (all times are CET), you can follow all the action HERE.
