Top three dominate in Round of 14

The pilots challenging for the title have all made it through to the Round of 8 in the season finale

Sonka was quickest in the Ro14

The Championship is still wide open with Michael Goulian, Martin Sonka and Matt Hall all through to the Round of 8. Here's how they flew in the opening round...

Heat 1
McLeod vs Hall
In different conditions from yesterday McLeod went into the track not knowing what might happen. At a difficult Gate 7 he hit a pylon and was clearly disappointed with his total time of 56.135s. Matt Hall went into the track with the knowledge that McLeod had hit the pylon and could take it easy. Hall never takes it easy and completed the track in a quick 54.266s.

Heat 2
Brageot vs Chambliss
Brageot set one of the quickest times when he posted a 53.152s run. The young Frenchman was smooth and calm in the track and his precision paid off. Brageot put the pressure on Chambliss, but the veteran Texan flew a great race. Chambliss was behind in the first two splits and then ahead, but as he passed the Finish Gate was 0.110s behind Brageot. It was enough to see him go through as the fastest loser.

Heat 3
Goulian vs Bolton
Goulian flew a safe line in this run and paid for it with a time of 54.883s. Bolton had been faster than Goulian all weekend and looked to be the favourite to knock the championship leader out. But in his run the Chilean picked up 6 seconds worth of penalties, ensuring that Goulian went through to the Round of 8 and can keep his title hopes alive.

Heat 4
Murphy vs Le Vot
After a disastrous day in Free Practice 3 and Qualifying, Murphy turned it around and flew a great run. He stopped the clock at 53.885s, putting the ball firmly in Le Vot's court. The Frenchman was flying well and looked to be in control of the heat, but hit the pylon at Gate 7, adding three seconds to his time and ending his Race Day.

Heat 5
Kopfstein vs Muroya
That tricky Gate 7 claimed another victim in Heat 5 when Kopfstein clipped it. This mistake gave him a time of 56.456s. The outgoing World Champion Muroya knew what he needed to do to get into the Round of 8. Muroya took it easy in the track, to make sure he was going to fly clean and cement his place in the Round of 8, which he did, finishing 2.732s faster than Kopfstein.

Heat 6
Ivanoff vs Sonka
Ivanoff gave away a one second penalty for exceeding the start speed, but still managed to set a time of 54.403s, which meant that Sonka would have to fly clean and quick to guarantee his place in the Round of 8 and still challenge for the title. Sonka flew exceptionally quickly and set the fastest time of the day at that point.

Heat 7
Velarde vs Dolderer
Velarde was another pilot to fly at a blistering pace and crossed the Finish Gate in 52.912s putting the pressure on Dolderer. The 2016 champion had a nightmare in his run, collecting 5 seconds' worth of penalties – 2 for flying too low and then a pylon hit, which comfortably put Velarde through.
