Red Bull Air Race pilot: 2008-2009
South Africa was represented in the Red Bull Air Race for the first time when native son Glen Dell joined the World Championship for the 2008-2009 seasons. Born in Johannesburg in 1962, Dell flew in the South African Air Force, worked as a pilot and senior training captain for South African Airways and was a South African Civil Aviation Authority-designated examiner. In competitive aerobatics he won a string of titles at the South African Championships and became the first pilot from his country to win an FAI Advanced World Championship. Across disciplines, he logged more than 27,000 hours of flight time. Dell passed away in 2013 as the result of an air show plane crash in South Africa.
