What is the Red Bull Air Race?

Created in 2003, the Red Bull Air Race World Championship has held more than 80 races around the world. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world's best race pilots in a pure motorsport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile, lightweight racing planes, pilots hit speeds of 370kmh while enduring forces of up to 12G as they navigate a low-level slalom track marked by 25- meter-high, air-filled pylons. In 2014, the Challenger Cup was conceived to help the next generation of pilots develop the skills needed for potential advancement to the Master Class that vies for the World Championship.

When and where will the Red Bull Air Race happen in Cannes?

The second race of the 2018 Red Bull Air Race World Championship will take place in Cannes on 20, 21 and 22 April 2018.

The racetrack, will be located in the Bay of Cannes while the official Race Airport is located at Cannes Mandelieu Airport.

What is the schedule of this race in Cannes?

The Red Bull Air Race in Cannes takes place over 3 days, and includes aviation related side acts. Below are the opening hours of the venue:

  • Friday April 20th: Free Practice day (0915 to 2000)
  • Saturday, April 21st: Qualifying day (0915 to 2000)
  • Sunday, April 22nd: Race day (1015 to 1900)

Please keep up to date with the schedule at: www.redbullairrace.com/en_INT/event/cannes

Will commentary be available in French and English?

Yes, commentary will be available in both French and English.

Is the Red Bull Air Race not dangerous?

The key focus and goal for the Red Bull Air Race GmbH is to always ensure the highest level of safety for pilots, crew and the spectators at each race. A dedicated team uses state of the art technology to monitor and adhere to the regulations provided by the FAI (Federation Aeronautique Internationale), local authorities in addition to local aeronautic authorities. The pilots are highly trained, low level flying pilots who are very experienced with this type of flying.

What is the environmental impact of the Red Bull Air Race?

The Red Bull Air Race is working with their official fuel and carbon reduction partner Air BP in order to offset the carbon emissions associated with aviation fuel during the 2018 season. In 2017, the Championship had a carbon neutral footprint thanks to Air BP and is striving to meet this target again in 2018.

There is a special environmental plan for the Bay of Cannes in place to protect the seagrass that covers 85% of the coast. In keeping with this and to safeguard the delicate ecosystem, Red Bull Air Race collaborated with a European company to sonar-scan the French bay, creating a 3D image of the sea floor that shows exactly where it is safe to position the roughly 50 anchors needed for the Air Gates.

How many pilots will be competing in Cannes?

There are two competition categories in the Red Bull Air Race:

  • The Master Class includes some of the world's best pilots. In 2018, 14 pilots compete in the World Championship. All 14 pilots compete at every race location.
  • The Challenger Class pilots fly in the Challenger Cup which has been designed to build on a pilot's existing experience. The Challenger Class pilots will fly at the same locations as the Master Class pilots. Each pilot flies a minimum of four races throughout the eight-race season.

During the race in Cannes, 14 pilots in the Master Class category will be competing for World Championship points, including 3 French pilots.

In the Challenger Cup, 6 pilots will compete, including 2 French pilots.

Will it be broadcast on TV?

Yes, the race will be broadcast live in 120 countries and in total Red Bull Air Race TV products will be visible in 177 territories.

A live broadcast of the race is scheduled on W9 and SFR Sports.

Qualifying and the race will also be available live on www.redbullairrace.com/live

How many spectators will there be?

There will be tens of thousands of spectators on site to witness history as the Red Bull Air Race takes off in France for the first time.

Will the Red Bull Air Race happen every year?

The Red Bull Air Race has taken place every year since 2014 (after a 3-year hiatus). The Red Bull Air Race is always focused on bringing the Red Bull Air Race World Championship close to fans and creating an exciting championship so each year, there are new locations on the global calendar.

The Red Bull Air Race will take place for the first time in France in 2018.

Keep watching Red Bull Air Race social channels and website for further details regarding future calendar announcements.

How much does it cost for the City?
