Carol Vorderman goes for a spin

TV star Carol Vorderman was put through her paces in a Red Bull Air Race raceplane this weekend flown by Challenger Class pilot Ben Murphy.

Vorderman, famed for being a maths genius, is a pilot, but had never been given the chance to see what the Challenger Class pilots get up to in the cockpit.

Ben Murphy and Carol Vorderman have known each other for many years, but this was the first time they had flown together, so she was thrilled to be given the opportunity to fly through the iconic pylons.

Vorderman in the skies...

Vorderman was visibly thrilled when she landed after her G-flight with Murphy. "That was fantastic! It was absolutely brilliant," said Vorderman. "I am officially a screamer," she added.

Vorderman was a former co-presenter on UK maths and word TV show, Countdown, where she used to solve near-impossible math problems in her head. So what better way to test her skill than to give her a test whilst she was flying. "I solved the problem, it took me a little longer, but I still got it right," said Vorderman.

"I think she did very well especially to be able to do the maths problem whilst flying a loop," added Murphy.

Not only is she a TV star and pilot, but Vorderman is also planning a round-the-world solo flight. "When you fly yourself you really appreciate the skill of the Red Bull Air Race pilots," she said. "I'm happy to take off and fly straight and level, but this is something else. Basically it's like driving, I have my licence and can drive on motorways, but this is completely different. It's the best guys in the world flying as fast as possible." she added.

Not many people have had the chance to fly through the pylons, but Vorderman was thrilled to be given the chance: "I loved going through the pylon. We were about 20m off the ground going 180kts. It was fantastic and flying with someone so skilled has been brilliant," she concluded.
