Czepiela takes the title in style in Texas

Luke Czepiela finished the season as Champion by taking the top spot in a race that went right down to the wire that needed a count back to see who would take the title.

Czepiela flew second in the race after Kevin Coleman, who set a time of 58.344s, which included a two second penalty – due to the testing conditions.

The Polish pilot then flew, setting a time of 57.736s, which would have been easily beatable yesterday, but was enough to put him top today. Baptiste Vignes and Daniel Ryfa both picked up penalties in their runs and were unable to knock Czepiela off his perch.

Last into the track was the favourite, Florian Bergér. His first two split times were red and he was behind. At the third split, the light had turned green and he was ahead. He somehow lost that advantage and when he crossed the Finish Gate he was 0.052s behind, handing the race, and the title, to Czepiela.

After the race both pilots had finished on 36 points with two wins and two second place finishes each. But after a count back the title was handed to Czepiela as he had a sixth place finish in addition.

"When I took off, I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I heard that Kevin Coleman had a penalty so I went for flying safe and it wasn't the fastest run I could have done. Flo was 0.5s behind, super close, a really tight race. This has been coming progressively – I was fourth in the Challenger Cup two years ago and third last year, so I would have been OK with second this time, but with this win I couldn't be happier," Czepiela said after his win.
