Goulian is glorious in Indy Free Practice

Michael Goulian set his stall out early in Indianapolis today and made it very clear to everyone that this World Championship is far from over.

In a flying programme delayed due to bad weather, the American set the two fastest times of the day, with the quickest delivered in Free Practice. He then posted a run time in FP2 that was only 0.118s slower.

Closest to Goulian in the earlier session was World Championship leader Martin Sonka, but the Czech pilot was more than half a second behind. Matthias Dolderer, who won the World Championship here in 2016, was third with a time of 1:04.892. Defending World Champion Yoshihide Muroya was fourth.

Matt Hall, who is sitting second in the standings just six points behind Sonka, could only climb as high as seventh in the early session, more than two seconds behind Goulian.

FP2 told a similar story for the Master Class pilots. As the heat and humidity intensified, the pilots needed to focus if they were going to set a competitive time.

Muroya pushed his way up to second on the timesheet; he crossed the Finish Gate in 1:04.517, just 0.276s behind Goulian. Dolderer was third again with Sonka in fourth.

The later session was a lot tighter with the top seven pilots finishing within a second of each other. Petr Kopfstein was fifth and McLeod sixth, with Mika Brageot taking seventh with a time of 1:05.202.

Hall shaved 0.414s off his time, but it was only good enough to see him ninth in FP2. The Aussie pilot will want to find lost time to see himself rise up the timesheet ready for Race Day.

Tomorrow the Master Class pilots have their last chance to test their lines in FP3 before Qualifying which starts at 16:00 local time – you can catch all the action live, right HERE.
