Lake Balaton 2019 Reactions: Challenger Cup Race 1

The pilots reflect on the first race of Lake Balaton

It was a race of firsts. The first Air Race to happen over Lake Balaton and the first time an Italian pilot has ever won an Air Race. Here's what the pilots thought about being a part of history...

1st Dario Costa
“So much work went into this. I continue to tell myself that talent doesn’t exist, it’s all about work, and it is like that, really. I kept it a bit conservative but had an Over-G anyway, so it was not that conservative. But I preferred to do a safer line, not for the time, but for the turbulence and the strong wind. This was the backup plan for the win, and I did what I wanted – only the Over-G was not planned – so it’s good!”

2nd Daniel Ryfa
“It’s all OK for me. Of course you want to win but I’m fine. My flight was good, but I picked up two penalties and that’s on me. I’m super happy for Dario, it’s his first win and I’ve seen it coming for a long time, he really deserves it so I’m happy.”

3rd Patrick Davidson
“I think all things considered with very little practice and circumstances out of my control, and out of Red Bull Air Race’s control, I am really happy. I flew conservatively because the wind was bad, it was really gusty, but I didn’t collect any penalties. And it’s my last race, so it was important for me to fly clean and I have another trophy and fond memories of the Air Race.”

4th Luke Czepiela
“I had an OK flight in Free Practice and I wanted to repeat it. But I wanted to be safety conscious, but I was too much, in the first VTM I only pulled 7G. So it was a slow flight and the wind caught me out at Gate 9, it was a big mistake. Between now and Chiba I will fly a lot!”

5th Vito Wyprächtiger
“It was cool. Conditions had changed since training and were not real easy. It was really windy and really, really bumpy, but it was a lot of fun. It would have been even cooler not to be last, but it wasn’t the plan to be on the podium today anyway, because then the flight suit would be all wet from Champagne. We’re going to save that for tomorrow!”
