Vive la France As Brageot And Le Vot Dominate Qualifying
For the first time in his Master Class career Mika Brageot took the top spot in Qualifying when he set the track record setting him up against Matthias Dolderer in the Round of 14, who may not be able to fly due to damage on his raceplane.
Brageot’s time of 1:01.431 was unbeatable and saw him at the top of Qualifying with his fellow compatriot François Le Vot just 0.405s behind in third. The two Frenchmen were split by current World Champion Martin Sonka who was the only other pilot to set a sub 1:02 time.
While Brageot was celebrating there were commiserations for Dolderer as he clipped the pylon in his second run, damaging his raceplane. He will not be able to repair it in time to race in the Round of 14 tomorrow.
Yoshihide Muroya, who had topped all three timesheets until Qualifying, could only manage fourth place, but his time was still only 0.513s slower than Brageot. Behind Muroya was Petr Kopfstein, who looks very competitive in the track. And Michael Goulian, who has finished on the podium twice here in Russia, could only finish sixth in Qualifying. Kirby Chambliss, who has also enjoyed success here in the last two seasons, including winning in 2017, was more than three seconds off the pace and finished down in12th.
Splitting Chambliss and Dolderer at the bottom of the timesheet was Juan Velarde, who was unable to put a clean run together and was 3.395s behind the leader.
Race Day tomorrow begins at 14:00 with the Round of 14. You can watch all the action live right here on the website.
